The Roof Solar Capacity Calculator determines the absolute maximum solar system your roof can physically support, before considering your electricity needs or budget. Understanding your roof's capacity ceiling is essential — if your optimal system size (from the System Size Calculator) exceeds what your roof can hold, you need to prioritize high-efficiency panels to maximize watts per square foot. Conversely, if your roof can hold far more panels than you need, you have flexibility to use standard-efficiency panels at a lower cost per watt.

The "usable percentage" accounts for the fact that not all roof area is available for solar panels. Setback requirements (typically 3 feet from roof edges and ridges for fire code access), obstructions (vents, skylights, chimneys, HVAC equipment), and non-south-facing sections all reduce usable area. For a simple gabled roof with good southern exposure, 60–70% usability is achievable. Complex rooflines with multiple dormers, hips, or heavy shading may yield only 30–50% usable area. Your installer will measure actual usable sections during a site visit.

Panel area varies by model — standard residential panels today measure roughly 65–68 inches × 39–42 inches, equating to about 17.6–19.9 sq ft. Premium higher-wattage panels (450–500W) are larger, around 22–25 sq ft each. To get the most accurate figure, look up the exact dimensions of the panel model your installer is proposing and convert to square feet: (length in inches × width in inches) / 144. Using a slightly larger panel area estimate than the nominal size gives a small safety margin for installation spacing between panels.

Roof capacity analysis should happen before you request installer quotes, so you arrive at those conversations knowing your physical constraints.
