The Home Energy Usage Calculator estimates your household's electricity consumption based on both your electric bill (a direct measurement) and home characteristics (a cross-check). The bill-based estimate — simply dividing your monthly bill by your electricity rate — is typically the most accurate method, since it reflects your actual usage patterns including appliances, heating/cooling system, and behavior. The home characteristics inputs (square footage, bedrooms, occupants) provide a useful sanity check and are especially helpful if you don't have recent bills available or want to estimate usage for a new home.

The U.S. average household consumes about 886 kWh per month according to the EIA, but actual consumption varies enormously by climate zone, home size, and lifestyle. A 1,200 sq ft apartment in San Diego might use 400 kWh/month; a 4,000 sq ft home in Houston with a pool and electric HVAC might use 2,500 kWh/month. Factors that increase usage most dramatically include electric resistance heating (vs. gas or heat pump), electric water heating, electric vehicle charging, a hot tub or pool, and large air conditioning loads in hot climates. These high-consumption items should be separately identified before sizing a solar system.

To get the most accurate monthly kWh figure, pull 12 months of bills from your utility's online portal and calculate the average. Seasonal variation is significant for most households — summer AC loads and winter heating loads can differ by 300–500 kWh/month, so the 12-month average is far more reliable than any single month. If you plan to add an EV, upgrade HVAC, or change your household size, adjust your usage estimate upward before finalizing your solar system size to avoid under-sizing.

Understanding your true energy usage is the most important first step in the solar process. Overestimating leads to an oversized, more expensive system; underestimating leads to disappointing savings.
